The Abia State government has announced plans to restrict the movement of cattle in certain parts of Umuahia, aiming to maintain cleanliness and order in the state capital.
Ambrose Jonah, Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Umuahia Zone, told journalists on Monday that the restriction targets areas including Government House, Workers’ Secretariat, Commissioners’ Quarters, Aba Road, and other major government and residential zones.
He reminded cattle herders of the earlier government advice to adopt ranching instead of allowing cows to roam freely. Jonah warned that offenders would face arrest and prosecution and also cautioned truck drivers against littering streets while transporting waste.
The unrestricted movement of cattle has reportedly caused environmental degradation and community conflicts, prompting the government to involve security agencies and community leaders to ensure peaceful enforcement. A detailed list of affected roads and areas will be officially communicated.
At a stakeholders’ meeting, Sarkin Yaro Danladi, the traditional ruler of the Hausa community in Abia, praised ASEPA’s engagement efforts and pledged to inform his people. He clarified that the restriction applies to all residents, regardless of ethnicity.
