Scottish Premiership leaders Heart of Midlothian have secured a pre-contract agreement with Uganda international forward Rogers Mato, who will join the club this summer from North Macedonian top-flight leaders Vardar. The 22-year-old striker has enjoyed a prolific season, and Hearts hope his arrival will bolster their attacking options as they defend their league title.
Mato’s Club Career: From Uganda to Europe
Rogers Mato began his football journey in Uganda, progressing through the ranks at Proline FC and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) FC before moving abroad. In 2023, he signed for Turkish side Sanliurfaspor, marking the start of his European career.
He then moved to North Macedonia, joining AP Brera before making the switch to Vardar last year. Since arriving at Vardar, Mato has been in sensational form, scoring 15 goals and providing two assists in 17 appearances, helping the team maintain their position at the top of the Macedonian First League, one point ahead of second-place Struga after 16 matches.
International Career with Uganda
Mato made his international debut for Uganda in 2022 and has since earned 41 caps, scoring eight goals. His recent performances include a goal in Uganda’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 defeat to Nigeria, demonstrating his ability to perform on big stages.
At just 22 years old, Mato is already considered one of Uganda’s most promising forwards, combining pace, technical ability, and clinical finishing—qualities that Hearts hope will translate into the Scottish Premiership.
The Move to Heart of Midlothian
The striker has agreed a three-year deal with Hearts, set to commence in July 2026 when his current contract with Vardar expires. Hearts manager and sporting director have praised Mato’s versatility and goal-scoring record, highlighting him as a player capable of making an immediate impact in Scotland.
Mato’s signing fits with Hearts’ recent strategy of targeting young, hungry forwards from international leagues, aiming to build a team capable of challenging domestically and in European competitions.
Why Mato Could Thrive in Scotland
Hearts fans can expect Mato to bring:
- Goal-scoring consistency: His 15 goals in 17 games for Vardar show a striker in peak form.
- International experience: Mato has played at AFCON and in other competitive international fixtures.
- Versatility: Comfortable leading the line or operating in a supporting role, adding flexibility to Hearts’ attack.
- Youth and potential: At 22, Mato has years to develop, potentially becoming a long-term asset for the club.
Former teammates and coaches have described him as a hardworking, ambitious, and determined player, traits that could make him a fan favorite at Tynecastle Stadium.
The Road Ahead
Mato joins a growing list of African players in the Scottish Premiership, following the trend of clubs in Scotland and the UK recruiting talent from emerging football nations. His move is expected to strengthen Hearts’ title defense and provide fresh attacking options under their current managerial team.
Fans will eagerly anticipate his debut in July 2026, hoping the Ugandan forward can replicate his goal-scoring exploits from North Macedonia in Scottish football.
