Gloucester Rugby have announced the signing of World Cup-winning South African lock Jean Kleyn ahead of the 2026-27 season, marking a major boost to the Cherry and Whites’ squad. Kleyn joins from Munster Rugby, where he spent a decade playing in the United Rugby Championship (URC), bringing a wealth of experience at the highest levels of international and club rugby.
Kleyn’s International Career: Springboks and Ireland
The 32-year-old lock has had a unique international career, representing both South Africa and Ireland. Kleyn earned his first cap for the Springboks in 2023 and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Rugby World Cup, coming off the bench in the final against New Zealand to secure South Africa’s victory.
Before returning to represent South Africa, Kleyn played for Ireland, qualifying on residency grounds after signing for Munster in 2016. During the 2019-20 period, he made five appearances for Ireland, including two matches at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, showcasing his versatility and elite-level skill set in the second row.
Gloucester Director of Rugby on the Signing
Gloucester’s Director of Rugby, George Skivington, highlighted the impact Kleyn will have on the squad:
“Jean is a player I’ve admired for a long time. He brings real edge, experience, and a winning mentality, which will be invaluable for our group. His physical presence and professionalism will raise standards across the squad, and we’re excited to welcome him to Kingsholm.”
The Cherry and Whites are set to benefit not only from Kleyn’s on-field prowess but also from his leadership and experience in pressure-filled games, including World Cup finals and European competitions.
Club Career: A Decade with Munster
Kleyn has made over 150 appearances for Munster Rugby in his 10-year tenure, helping the Irish province secure the 2022-23 URC title. Known for his powerful physical presence, lineout expertise, and defensive solidity, Kleyn has been a cornerstone of Munster’s pack, earning respect from teammates, opponents, and coaches alike.
Reflecting on his move, Kleyn said:
“I’m thrilled to be joining Gloucester Rugby next season. It’s a club with incredible history and a passionate fanbase, and the vision shared with me really matched what I was looking for in the next chapter of my career.”
Gloucester’s Recruitment Ahead of 2026-27
Kleyn is the fourth confirmed signing for Gloucester ahead of the 2026-27 season, following the arrivals of Wales internationals Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, and scrum-half Dan Robson. These acquisitions demonstrate Gloucester’s ambition to strengthen both the pack and the spine of the team, aiming to compete at the top of the Premiership Rugby table and in European competitions.
The addition of Kleyn will provide height, strength, and experience to Gloucester’s second row, giving head coach George Skivington more options for both domestic league matches and high-intensity European fixtures.
Kleyn’s Style of Play
Renowned for his lineout intelligence, ball-carrying ability, and aggressive defense, Kleyn has been a key asset wherever he has played. He combines powerful scrummaging with mobility around the park, making him a dual-threat in both set-pieces and open play. His winning mentality and experience in international finals will also serve as a mentorship resource for younger players at Kingsholm.
What This Means for Gloucester
With the signing of Jean Kleyn, Gloucester continue to build a physically dominant and tactically versatile squad, blending international experience with homegrown talent. Fans can expect a stronger forward pack, capable of competing for Premiership Rugby honors and pushing for success in European tournaments.
Kleyn’s move also signals Gloucester’s intent to attract world-class talent in the lead-up to the 2026-27 season, reinforcing their ambitions as one of England’s leading rugby clubs.
