Newswatch Co-Founder Yakubu Mohammed Dies at 75

Yakubu Mohammed, co-founder of the influential Newswatch magazine, has passed away at the age of 75 after a prolonged illness, according to reports by The Cable.

His death comes just months after the passing of fellow co-founder Dan Agbese in November 2025. The family has not yet released an official statement.

Born on April 4, 1950, in Ologba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mohammed held a bachelor’s degree in science. He served as managing editor of Newswatch from 1986 to 1994 and later as deputy chief executive officer of Newswatch Communications Limited. Beyond journalism, he was also appointed pro-chancellor and chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University’s governing council.

Mohammed’s death marks a significant loss to Nigeria’s journalism and media landscape.
