
The Lagos State Government has arrested a BRT driver in connection with the death of a pedestrian, Elizabeth Fresh, who was struck by a high-capacity bus at Airport Junction, Ikeja.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving a bus from the Red and White Bus Operating Company, regulated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). The driver initially fled the scene but was later traced and handed over to the police.
In a statement, LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, confirmed that eyewitnesses verified the pedestrian was hit by a bus in the Red and White fleet. The agency immediately contacted the victim’s family to offer condolences, responding to their demand for the driver’s prosecution.
Following directives, the driver was formally presented to the police at the Domestic Wing Police Station, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of the bus company’s management.
Describing the accident as a tragic loss, LAMATA emphasized its commitment to safety and accountability across all transport services, urging pedestrians to use designated bridges when crossing BRT corridors to avoid future accidents. The authority also pledged continued collaboration with transport operators, security agencies, and the public to prevent similar incidents.
