A tragic incident unfolded in Shivamogga district, Karnataka, as a 51-year-old teacher, who also served as a Booth Level Officer (BLO), died by suicide at a government higher primary school in Shikaripur taluk. Authorities confirmed that the case is under investigation, while the deceased’s family alleged that work-related pressure contributed to the act.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Tuesday during school hours. The teacher reportedly sent students out of the classroom, stating that he needed to complete some records, and then closed the door and windows. When other teachers noticed the students sitting on the school veranda, they attempted to enter the classroom but found the door and windows locked. Forcibly opening a window from the opposite side, they discovered that the teacher had hanged himself inside.
Teachers and villagers immediately tried to provide first aid and resuscitation, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Witnesses reported that the teacher had arrived at the school in the morning after completing voter verification duties in the village, highlighting his dual responsibilities as an educator and a BLO.
Shikaripur Block Education Officer (BEO) Lokesh stated on Wednesday that the education department did not impose any undue work pressure on the teacher. “He was performing his duties normally. We do not know why he took this step,” Lokesh said, adding that he personally visited the school and, even after inspection, no specific reason for the suicide could be identified.
Shikaripur Police Inspector Anand Patil elaborated that the teacher had expressed stress over his BLO responsibilities to his wife. “He confided in his wife that he was under severe work pressure and was not mentally well. His wife advised him not to worry and suggested that, since their children’s education was nearly complete, he could consider opting for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS),” the inspector said. Despite these discussions, the exact reason for the suicide remains unclear, and police continue to investigate.
Following the incident, a case was registered on Tuesday evening at the Shikaripur Rural Police Station under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, based on a complaint filed by the teacher’s wife. Authorities are examining all aspects, including the pressures associated with his BLO responsibilities and his personal circumstances.
This incident has raised concerns about the mental health of government employees, particularly those with dual responsibilities in education and electoral work. The teacher’s death underscores the challenges faced by officials tasked with both administrative duties and frontline community service, especially in rural areas where workload and public expectations can be high.
Local villagers and school staff have expressed shock at the incident. Many highlighted the teacher’s dedication and professionalism, noting that he had arrived at school early and was performing his duties diligently before taking his life. The school administration and community members have urged authorities to take steps to support staff wellbeing and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The police investigation is ongoing, with officials reviewing work records, schedules, and communications related to the teacher’s responsibilities as a BLO. Authorities have indicated that the inquiry will consider whether systemic pressures contributed to the suicide, and whether additional measures are needed to safeguard employees under similar dual-role responsibilities.
This incident has sparked conversations in the region about the mental health of government employees, workload management, and the need for structured support systems for public servants handling multiple responsibilities. Local officials and education department representatives have said that counseling services and stress management resources will be explored to support teachers and other frontline officials.
As the investigation continues, police and education authorities are maintaining close contact with the teacher’s family to provide updates and ensure transparency in the inquiry. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing workplace stress and mental health concerns among public servants, especially those in rural areas who often face high expectations with limited support.
The Shivamogga administration has also urged other officials and BLOs to report any work-related distress promptly and seek assistance to prevent further such incidents. Community members and teachers’ associations are advocating for increased awareness of mental health issues and proactive steps to support personnel managing heavy workloads.
The tragic death of the 51-year-old teacher has deeply affected the Shikaripur taluk community, including students, colleagues, and villagers, highlighting the critical need for a balanced work environment and accessible mental health support for government employees performing essential duties.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains open, and all factors—including administrative workload, personal circumstances, and psychological well-being—will be examined to determine contributing causes and ensure accountability where necessary.
The incident is expected to trigger discussions within the education department and local administration on preventive measures, with officials indicating that guidelines and support systems for employees with dual roles will be reviewed and strengthened in the aftermath of this tragedy.
