London, 14 January 2026 – Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the high-profile signing of England international Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of £35 million. The 25-year-old midfielder, formerly of Chelsea, has joined Spurs on a contract running until 2031, beating competition from Aston Villa for his signature.
Gallagher, who left Chelsea in August 2024 to join Atletico Madrid for around £33 million in a swap deal that saw Joao Felix move to Stamford Bridge, expressed excitement about the move.
“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” Gallagher said. “I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”
Gallagher’s England Career and International Ambitions
Gallagher has 22 caps for England, though he has only played once under current national team manager Thomas Tuchel, appearing for 59 minutes in a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, a return to the Premier League with Tottenham could bolster his chances of being selected for England’s summer squad. Gallagher was an unused member of the squad at the 2022 World Cup but made five appearances at Euro 2024, where England finished runners-up to Spain.
Tottenham’s Motivation for the Signing
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank praised Gallagher’s qualities both on and off the pitch:
“Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad. He has captained teams, bringing leadership, maturity, character and personality to the dressing room. His running power, pressing ability, and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch.”
The addition comes at a critical time for Spurs, who have struggled in recent weeks. Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is set to miss at least three months after hamstring surgery, leaving a gap in midfield that Gallagher is expected to fill.
Spurs’ Current Form and Fixtures
Tottenham currently sit 14th in the Premier League table with 27 points from 21 games. Their recent form has been inconsistent, with just one win in the last six league matches. They also exited the FA Cup in the third round, losing to Aston Villa, marking seven defeats in 13 games across all competitions.
Spurs remain in contention for the Champions League knockout stages, currently placed 11th in the group, but strengthening midfield options is crucial for both domestic and European ambitions. Gallagher could make his debut in the upcoming Premier League clash against West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (15:00 GMT).
Gallagher’s Career Path
Gallagher, a product of Chelsea’s youth academy, joined the club in 2006 and had loan spells at:
- Charlton Athletic
- Swansea City
- West Bromwich Albion
- Crystal Palace
He made 136 Premier League appearances across Chelsea, West Brom, and Palace before moving to Atletico Madrid, where he featured in 77 games across all competitions, scoring seven goals.
His return to the Premier League represents both a career revival and an opportunity for Tottenham to inject energy, creativity, and leadership into their midfield.
