Sale Sharks full-back Luke James has committed his future to the Premiership club, signing a long-term contract until 2029. The 26-year-old has been a key figure for Sale since making his debut in 2017, and his new deal reflects the club’s confidence in his talent and leadership.
James has made 128 appearances for Sale Sharks over the past nine seasons, crossing the try line 22 times. Despite limited game time this season due to injury, he has still made an impact, scoring four tries in just four matches, including a memorable hat-trick against Leicester Tigers on his return to action.
A Player with Deep Sale Roots
James’ connection to Sale runs deep. Having progressed through the club’s player development group, he signed his first professional contract in 2017 and quickly established himself as a reliable back.
“I’m really happy to be staying at Sale. It’s a club that truly feels like home to me and I know it’s where I’m meant to be. I grew up watching the club with my parents, and my brother was a ball boy before we both played together here,” James said.
He added:
“It’s an exciting time for everyone at the club. We’ve been in the top four in the last few seasons and I feel like we’re close to taking the next step and winning trophies. It’s the right place for me to develop as a player and achieve everything I want in the game.”
The full-back has also praised Sale’s new coaching team, including Byron McGuigan and Joey Carbery, and expressed enthusiasm for continuing to learn under their guidance.
International Experience
James is no stranger to international rugby. An England Under-20 international, he earned his first junior cap against South Africa in 2018 and played a total of five matches during the U20 World Championship the following year. His experiences at junior international level have been pivotal in shaping his attacking flair and game awareness, qualities he brings to Sale Sharks week in and week out.
Sale Sharks’ Perspective
Sale Sharks Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson expressed his delight at James’ commitment to the club:
“Luke is homegrown, he loves the club and on top of that he’s an unbelievable player. He’s international class but hasn’t yet had the run of games to show everyone what he can do.
“He could start in a number of positions for us, but the most important thing is that he has the desire to be an integral part of what we’re building. I’m really excited that he’s staying with us.”
James’ versatility in the backline and his attacking instincts make him a key part of Sale’s ambitions, particularly as they aim to challenge for Premiership honours and European qualification in the coming seasons.
Looking Ahead
With James now secured until 2029, Sale Sharks can focus on building around one of their most promising talents. Fans will be hoping that his continued development, coupled with a fit squad and strategic signings, can propel Sale into contention for domestic trophies and establish the club as a consistent force in English rugby.
