The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested the driver of an empty Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker following a fatal road accident at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe–Ijebu Road.
The crash claimed the lives of a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger, according to Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcyclist was riding against traffic on a prohibited one-way route when he was struck by the high-speed tanker. Both victims died instantly from the violent collision.
“Preliminary security findings disclosed that the commercial motorcyclist, who was conveying a male passenger, was unlawfully traversing a prohibited route, in blatant contravention of existing traffic statutes, when he was struck by the empty PMS tanker traveling at high speed,” the statement said.
LASTMA operatives promptly secured the scene to prevent further accidents, while the tanker driver was taken into custody. The Nigeria Police Force, including officers from Noforija Police Division, has been notified to conduct a thorough investigation.
Hon. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, described the accident as “a sorrowful and sobering testament to the devastating repercussions of traffic law infractions.” He emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided if traffic regulations were observed.
Giwa also cautioned commercial motorcyclists and other road users against risky practices, including riding against traffic or recklessly competing with larger vehicles.
“LASTMA once again implores the motoring public to regard traffic laws not as instruments of punishment, but as indispensable safeguards instituted to protect human lives and ensure harmonious coexistence on Lagos roads,” the agency said.
The tanker has since been removed, allowing traffic to resume along the affected corridor. Investigations into the incident continue.
