Sowore Foundation Awards 250 Scholarships, Empowers Artisans, Hosts 2026 #ComeToKiribo Festival in Ondo

The Sowore Foundation, founded by human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, has awarded 250 scholarships to students across disciplines including Medicine, Nursing, and Law. The organisation also empowered 45 artisans and other vulnerable members of society during its 2026 #ComeToKiribo Festival, held on January 1 in Kiribo, Ondo State.

The festival, now a prominent annual event blending education, culture, sports, and community empowerment, attracted participants from across Nigeria as well as neighbouring West African nations, including Ghana and the Republic of Benin. The Kiribo Road Race, a key feature of the festival, is reportedly the world’s first marathon held on January 1 each year.

Speaking at the event, Sowore described the race as symbolic, promoting health, fitness, and community consciousness while sending a message to government authorities. “It is to awaken the spirit of the community, to ensure fitness as we usher ourselves into the new year, and to show that where government has failed, we succeed,” he said.

The 2026 festival also commemorated the 21st anniversary of the passing of Sowore’s father, David Omoremilekun Sowore, whose life of discipline, education, and community service inspired the foundation. Sowore reflected on his father’s legacy, highlighting his commitment to free and compulsory education and the raising of nearly 20 children as a model of learning and social responsibility.

This year, the scholarship programme expanded, prioritising students in Medicine, Nursing, and Law. Sowore emphasised that the foundation also supports those unable to pursue formal education due to circumstances beyond their control, reflecting its all-encompassing vision for social empowerment.

In addition to scholarships, the foundation disbursed over ₦20 million in cash prizes, awarded 21 artisans with financial and material support, and assisted 24 persons living with special needs. Academic competitions, including debates, quizzes, and dictation contests, awarded tablets and cash prizes, while sporting events featured road races, swimming, boat rowing, regattas, and fun runs, ensuring participation across all ages and abilities.

Sowore concluded by reiterating the foundation’s mission to make Kiribo a hub of intellectual, cultural, and athletic development, stating that “the village of Kiribo, through consistent grassroots investment, is now firmly on the global map.”
