Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo on Thursday ordered the demolition of a notorious structure known as Sambel Joint in Idoji, Okene Local Government Area, following intelligence linking it to criminal activities.
The demolition aligns with the state government’s broader directive invalidating all fraudulently or illegally acquired properties in Kogi, declaring them null and void. Properties found to be illegally acquired or used for criminal purposes are to be reclaimed, and those involved prosecuted, according to Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo.
Fanwo stated that the demolished properties—located at GP. 23A, 23B, 24A & 24B (Government Quarters, Idoji, Okene) with Certificate of Occupancy KG. 13958—had been unlawfully occupied and converted into operational bases for criminals, violating the Kogi State Land Administration Law and the Anti-Kidnapping Law.
During the demolition, Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods, describing the action as a proactive measure to curb criminality in the state.
“We are here to secure our people. Any house used to harbour criminals will go down. We will take the fight to them wherever they are,” Ododo said, warning that Kogi will not serve as a safe haven for criminals.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for supporting Kogi State’s security efforts. Investigations revealed that the demolished properties belonged to the government but were illegally taken over and converted into criminal hideouts.
“The demolition you see today ensures the security our people deserve. Criminal activities in this area were causing unrest, and decisive action had to be taken,” the governor stated.
