Anambra Begins Crackdown on Buildings Over Drainage, Waste Violations; Defaulters Face ₦20,000–₦5m Fine

The Anambra State Government has announced the full enforcement of its environmental laws, warning that owners of public and private buildings that violate drainage and waste-management regulations will face stiff penalties.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, said all buildings without functional catchment pits, drainage systems, or approved stormwater control mechanisms would be sanctioned in line with existing laws.

According to the notice, indiscriminate disposal of refuse on roads, expressways, or into drainages will no longer be tolerated.

“Anyone caught dropping refuse indiscriminately on roads, expressways, or into drainages will be arrested, prosecuted, and fined,” the statement read.

The government also prohibited the improper disposal of sachet water nylons, PET bottles, plastics, and other waste materials, stressing that such items must only be discarded at designated litter points.

Dr. Mefor disclosed that offenders will be prosecuted, with fines ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦1,000,000 for individuals, while corporate organisations risk penalties between ₦100,000 and ₦5,000,000.

“Offenders will be fined and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Penalties:
– Individuals: ₦20,000 to ₦1,000,000
– Corporate organisations: ₦100,000 to ₦5,000,000,” he stated.

The commissioner urged residents, property owners, and businesses to comply with environmental standards, noting that the enforcement exercise is aimed at preventing flooding, improving public health, and promoting environmental sustainability across the state.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Anambra, warning that enforcement agencies have been fully mobilised to implement the directive.
