A classroom building at Odokerere High School, a Lagos State government-owned school in Ikorodu, collapsed on Thursday during teaching hours, raising concerns over the safety of public school infrastructure.
Remarkably, no casualties were recorded, as pupils reportedly managed to escape before sustaining serious injuries.
A video of the incident, shared on social media platform X by user @omoelerinjare, has since gone viral. In the footage, a narrator expressed concern over what could have happened had the students not acted quickly.
“This Odokerere High School in Ikorodu collapsed while the students were in class, but thankfully nothing happened,” the narrator said. “A lot could have happened if the children had not been smart enough to escape and rescue themselves.”
The narrator also alleged that school authorities attempted to prevent people from recording the incident, questioning why documenting such a dangerous occurrence was discouraged.
The incident has sparked reactions online, with Nigerians calling on the Lagos State Government to conduct urgent inspections of public school buildings and ensure the safety of both pupils and teachers.
As of this report, officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Education and emergency agencies had not released a statement on the cause of the collapse or whether the affected classrooms would be closed pending further investigation.
