BSUTH Approves Emergency Hiring of Retired and Young Midwives to Strengthen Labour Wards

The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has approved the immediate engagement of retired midwives and qualified young midwife nurses to restore full services at its labour wards.

According to Tsenenghul Moses, Head of Public Relations and Protocol, the initiative covers the main hospital complex, BSUTH Annex, and the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, all of which have faced staffing challenges affecting obstetric and delivery services.

Under the emergency arrangement, ten retired midwives (matrons) and competent young midwife nurses will be recruited to bridge staffing gaps, ensure timely patient care, and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes across Benue State.

Qualified applicants were instructed to report to the Office of the Head of Nursing Services on January 15 and 16, 2026, with successful candidates expected to begin work on January 19, 2026.

Health stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing the emergency recruitment as a pragmatic step to bolster maternal and child health services at the state’s premier tertiary hospital.
