Why FAAN Thrives Under Olubunmi Kuku

Since taking the helm of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in late 2023, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku has transformed the organisation into a model of operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and passenger-centric service.

Confronted with ageing infrastructure, revenue leakages, and declining passenger confidence, Kuku’s administration has implemented a comprehensive airport modernisation strategy. Key achievements include:

  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Rehabilitation of Runway 18R/36L and Taxiway B at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), expansion of domestic terminals, and network-wide upgrades to airfield lighting, HVAC, and power systems.
  • Safety and Security: Deployment of advanced screening systems, CCTV upgrades, digital radios, and centralised emergency operations centres, boosting performance in ICAO and TSA audits.
  • Financial and Digital Reforms: Recovery of legacy debts, optimisation of airport lands, and adoption of Microsoft Business Central ERP for transparency and real-time monitoring.
  • Passenger Experience: Lounge refurbishments, mother-and-child facilities, support for passengers with reduced mobility, simplified complaint resolution, and a transparent refund policy.
  • Human Capital Development: Implementation of the revised wage structure, staff arrears clearance, targeted training programmes, and a performance management system aligned with institutional KPIs.
  • Global Engagement: Hosting the FAAN National Aviation Conference, attracting international investment, and expanding collaborations with IATA, AviaDev, and other aviation stakeholders.

Through strategic foresight, disciplined execution, and stakeholder collaboration, Olubunmi Kuku has repositioned FAAN as a reliable, modern, and globally compliant aviation authority. Under her leadership, Nigeria’s airports are becoming internationally competitive hubs for travel, trade, and aviation innovation.
