Benue State Governor Locks Out Late Civil Servants During Surprise Visit
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, on Wednesday, locked out several civil servants at the state secretariat in Makurdi for arriving late to work.
The governor made an unannounced visit to the secretariat around 10:35 a.m. to inspect ongoing renovation projects, including the installation of new lighting. During his visit, security personnel attached to his convoy shut the gates, preventing tardy workers from accessing their offices.
Touring various ministries, Alia expressed displeasure over widespread absenteeism, noting that commissioners and senior officials were missing from duty. Addressing the gathered civil servants, he criticized their lack of commitment and warned of consequences.
“With this attitude, you are creating a vicious cycle for your families. You cannot progress because you are cheating the system,” Alia stated.
He further emphasized that governance is a collective responsibility, urging workers to take their duties seriously.
“I have the power to identify and dismiss those failing in their responsibilities. I’m speaking not just as a governor, but as a priest, to warn you about the dangers of negligence,” he said.
Alia urged the civil servants to reconsider their work ethic, not just for themselves, but for the people who depend on them.
