In just three decades since the UFC’s founding, few fighters have had a debut year as electrifying as Ateba Gautier. The Cameroonian sensation has quickly risen through the ranks of the middleweight division, combining raw power, speed, and technical skill with a uniquely wholesome personality that sets him apart from his peers.
A Breakout Year in the UFC
In 2025, Ateba Gautier made an unforgettable mark on the UFC world. After impressing in Dana White’s Contender Series, Gautier became one of the most exciting prospects in the middleweight division. Over the course of the year, he collected three victories, including three first-round finishes, and earned two performance bonuses for his thrilling fights.
But despite all his success inside the octagon, one of Gautier’s most cherished moments came far from the roar of the crowd: adopting his twin kittens, Mya and Lili.
“It was one of my favourite moments of the year – 100%,” Gautier told BBC Sport.
This softer side of the 6ft 4in fighter surprises many fans. His love for animals stands in stark contrast to the typical image of a professional UFC fighter.
“I have always liked cats,” he says. “Back in Cameroon, we had seven or eight cats. I think I wanted cats here in England because I couldn’t have a lion or a tiger. I love animals. I will always be more comfortable in the jungle, the forest, or the wild than in a place like Las Vegas with all the lights. This life is not for me.”
Gautier’s perspective on life is rooted in simplicity and peace, rather than fame or material wealth.
“For me, the beauty is not where there are lights, cameras, and parties. That is a way to spend money and get into trouble. You’ll usually find bad things in those places. But in the wild, I feel at peace.”
From Cameroon to Manchester: A Journey of Dedication
Gautier’s journey to UFC stardom began at age 19, when he left Cameroon and traveled over 3,500 miles to Manchester, England. Leaving behind six siblings, his mother, and everything familiar, he joined Manchester Top Team, a gym that also trains UFC featherweight Lerone Murphy.
His twin cats, gifted by coach Carl Prince, became more than just pets—they provided comfort and stability in a new country. This emotional support clearly translated into success in the octagon, with Gautier’s relentless training producing three first-round finishes in 2025 alone.
His success has also had a tangible impact on his family in Cameroon, allowing him to provide for them and fulfill his mother’s dream of retiring in comfort with a new home.
Inspiration from Legends: Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, and Cristiano Ronaldo
Even as he rises in the UFC ranks, self-doubt remains a driving force for Gautier. He often wakes up in the middle of the night thinking:
“I need to train – I’m not that good.”
To push through these doubts, Gautier draws inspiration from the greatest icons in sports and music. From Michael Jackson to Muhammad Ali and Cristiano Ronaldo, he studies how they achieved greatness through relentless hard work and resilience.
“How did they get there? It didn’t happen in one day – it took years of hard work. They didn’t win all the time, but when they lost it was a lesson. If that’s the mindset, you can never truly lose.”
Gautier’s ultimate goal is to inspire future generations:
“In 100 years, I want people to say, ‘I want to be like Ateba.’ Not just one person – many people.”
Eyes on the Prize: UFC Rankings and the Championship
Gautier’s next fight is against Andrey Pulyaev at UFC 324. A victory could propel him into the UFC middleweight rankings for the first time, but Gautier’s ambitions go far beyond immediate accolades. His ultimate target is middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev, known for his dominance in the division.
“Chimaev has a good style, first and foremost. He’s got strong grappling. But I’m not his last opponent or his next opponent – I’m Ateba. When the time comes, it will be my time.”
Respectful of his opponents yet confident in his abilities, Gautier is determined to leave a lasting legacy:
“If it’s my time to shine, it won’t matter who’s in front of me. I’ll show everyone that it’s my time. I respect him; he’s good. I respect everything he’s done. But when it’s my time, big brother, it’s time to sleep.”
UFC Praise and Growing Reputation
UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently lauded Gautier’s skillset, praising his “terrifying power, super speed, and excellent technique” and calling him the future of the middleweight division.
At just 23 years old, Ateba Gautier has already proven he has the talent, mindset, and drive to become one of the UFC’s brightest stars. Between his love of animals, admiration for legends, and relentless pursuit of greatness, Gautier is carving a unique path that blends humility with raw athletic excellence.
