The father of Umar Auwal, the prime suspect arrested over the brutal killing of seven members of a single family in Kano, has publicly called for his son to be executed, insisting that he deserves no mercy.
The shocking attack occurred on Saturday in Dorayi Gidan Kwari, Chiranchi area of Kano metropolis, where Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children were violently murdered. The gruesome incident has triggered widespread outrage and mourning across Kano State and the country at large.
The victims were identified as Maimuna (17), Aisha (16), Bashir (13), Abubakar (10), Faruk (7), and Abdussalam, aged just 18 months.
According to police reports, the attackers—allegedly led by Umar—forcefully entered the family’s home in broad daylight and carried out the killings.
The Kano State Police Command has confirmed that Umar Auwal confessed to the massacre. Authorities also disclosed that he admitted responsibility for another recent attack in Tudun Yola, where two housewives were murdered and their home set on fire.
Speaking during an emotional interview on a local radio station, the suspect’s father, Malam Auwal, openly disowned his son and urged security agencies and the judiciary to act swiftly.
“What he did to my younger sister and her six children—my wife’s sister and her co-wife—is unforgivable. I distance myself completely from him,” he said.
He argued that the suspect should not be kept alive at public expense, insisting that capital punishment was the only just outcome.
“I don’t want the government to waste time prosecuting him. People like Umar should be eliminated. They should not be kept in custody and fed with taxpayers’ money,” Malam Auwal declared.
He further alleged that Umar had a history of extreme violence, claiming that the suspect had previously killed another relative years ago and mutilated her body—an allegation that has intensified public shock and renewed calls for a deeper investigation into the suspect’s past.
Despite the pain, Malam Auwal praised the Kano State Police for their swift response, saying he had already come to terms with losing his son.
“I have sacrificed him already,” he said, adding that neither he nor the suspect’s mother would attend court proceedings related to the case.
