Ondo College of Health Technology Students Protest Over Poor Facilities, Alleged Extortion

Students of the Ondo State College of Health Technology staged a protest on Monday, decrying poor learning facilities and alleged extortion by the school management.

The protesters barricaded the school entrance and demanded the provision of basic amenities. Many carried placards reading: “We Are Tired of This Wickedness,” “Health Tech With Poor Environment,” “Stop Extortion Now,” and “No Solution, No Exams.” Bonfires were lit as students chanted solidarity songs, warning that academic activities could be disrupted if their grievances were ignored.

One student highlighted the lack of portable water, functional classrooms, laboratories, hostels, and a stable power supply. She also accused some lecturers of demanding money for textbooks and assignments, further worsening students’ struggles amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.

A staff member, speaking anonymously, said the students’ demands were reasonable and urged management to prioritize welfare. “The state government, controlling 80% of school policies, shares some responsibility. Dialogue is essential,” the source added.

The rector, Emoruwa Oluwanbe, denied the allegations but confirmed that the Ondo State government had convened a meeting regarding the situation. He assured that the management would release a comprehensive response soon.

The protesting students vowed to continue until their demands for improved facilities and fair treatment are fully addressed.
