Warri–Itakpe Train Service resumes today as NRC completes maintenance works

Passenger operations on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor have officially resumed today, following the completion of critical maintenance, safety inspections, and system upgrades by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

In a statement on Monday, October 27, 2025, the NRC announced that the temporary suspension of the service allowed engineers to carry out essential track and rolling stock repairs, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and safety.

“The suspension period was necessary to ensure that the Warri–Itakpe corridor continues to meet the highest standards of safety and reliability,” the Corporation said.

Online Ticketing Reopened

Ahead of the service resumption, the NRC reopened its online ticketing platformhttps://nrc-fane.ng — at 12 noon on Monday, allowing passengers to book tickets up to 48 hours in advance.
The Corporation encouraged travellers to make early bookings either through the portal or at designated railway stations to avoid last-minute rush as full operations return.

Operational Details

According to the NRC, train operations will begin with seven coaches — six standard-class coaches and one business-class coach.
A revised train timetable has also been released, incorporating temporary speed restrictions (TSRs) for continued safety monitoring and performance evaluation.

“Operations will commence with seven coaches — six standard class and one business class,” the NRC stated. “These adjustments are part of our effort to ensure passenger safety and smooth travel experience.”

Commitment to Passenger Safety

The NRC expressed gratitude to passengers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding during the service suspension, acknowledging the inconvenience it may have caused.

Managing Director of the Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, reaffirmed NRC’s commitment to maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient rail transport services.

“We thank our passengers for their support and patience,” Opeifa said. “The Corporation remains dedicated to improving its services and ensuring that every journey on the Warri–Itakpe corridor meets the highest standards of safety and comfort.”

Background

The Warri–Itakpe rail line, a key section of Nigeria’s standard gauge network, links the oil-rich Delta region to the central part of the country, facilitating both passenger movement and freight transport.
It has become a vital component of Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure, supporting economic activity and reducing road congestion along major southern routes.

With the resumption of operations, the NRC says it will continue monitoring performance closely while advancing plans for further expansion and modernization of the country’s rail system.
