Nigerian Man Loses Eye After Police Teargas Attack in Abuja; Another Shot in Katsina

A young man, Abraham Immanuel, has lost his left eye following an alleged night raid by officers of the Bwari Police Division in Abuja. Eyewitnesses claim that police fired teargas at close range, causing the severe injury.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the victim was seen with a bandaged left eye. A voice off-camera said, “This is Mr. Abraham Immanuel, the victim of a night raid where the DPO of Bwari Police Division shot teargas directly at his eye. Today is January 8, 2026. This is barbaric and inhumane.” The injured man reportedly received treatment at General Hospital, Asokoro.

In a separate incident in Sabon Gari, Katsina State, another young man, identified as Tasiru, was shot near the neck by police officers on January 1. Eyewitness Aliyu Abdullahi recounted that police were pursuing a suspect when Tasiru collapsed close to his shop. The victim was rushed to a hospital and later discharged due to the high cost of treatment, which reportedly totaled N45,500 for the initial procedures.

Aliyu alleged that the police failed to properly investigate the incident, with hospital officials later claiming the injury was not bullet-related. He condemned what he described as repeated police abuses and called for justice for victims of such attacks.

Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns over police conduct in Nigeria, raising questions about the use of excessive force and the accountability of security personnel.
