Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Joshua’s Team Members
Adeniyi Kayode, the chauffeur driving former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, appeared in court in Nigeria following a tragic car crash that killed two of the boxer’s close team members. The accident occurred on 29 December near Lagos when the vehicle carrying Joshua, his personal trainer Latif Ayodele, and strength coach Sina Ghami collided with a stationary lorry on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash resulted in the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, while Joshua, 36, sustained injuries and was treated in hospital before being discharged two days later.
Court Appearance and Legal Proceedings
Kayode, 46, appeared at Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State on Tuesday. The case was adjourned until 25 February to allow the prosecutor additional time to seek legal advice. During the hearing, Kayode wore an all-black outfit, including a hoodie, trousers, and shoes, and did not address the court.
Previously, he had been charged with four offences, including death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. Kayode was released on bail set at 5 million naira (approximately $3,500 or £2,600).
Anthony Joshua’s Connection to Sagamu
Anthony Joshua, born in Watford, England, has familial roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, which is near the location of the crash. At the time of the accident, Joshua was reportedly traveling to visit relatives for New Year celebrations. Following the crash, images circulated showing Joshua being helped out of the wrecked Lexus SUV, highlighting the severity of the collision.
Tributes to Lost Friends
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Joshua shared an emotional tribute to Ghami and Ayodele on Instagram. He wrote about his deep admiration and grief for his team members, describing them as “great men” whose presence he valued more than he realized. He acknowledged the profound difficulty of losing his friends while also expressing concern for the families of the deceased.
The boxing world has also paid tribute to the late Ayodele and Ghami. Notably, promoter Eddie Hearn described them as “deeply missed,” emphasizing their significant role in Joshua’s career and life.
The Impact of the Crash on Joshua
The fatal accident has had a profound personal and professional impact on Anthony Joshua. Following his recovery, he returned to training, reportedly engaging in “mental strength therapy” alongside his gym sessions to process the trauma of the crash and the loss of his team members.
Legal and Safety Implications
The case has brought attention to road safety in Nigeria, particularly on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which is known for frequent accidents involving high-speed vehicles. The charges against Kayode highlight issues of responsible driving and the legal consequences of negligence on the road.
As the court proceedings continue, the world watches closely, both to see justice for Ayodele and Ghami and to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic accident.
