Reps Propose Creation of Additional Local Government Areas in Benue

The House of Representatives has proposed a constitutional amendment to enable the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State.

The proposal, contained in Bill HB2527, sponsored by Rep. David Ogewu (APC–Oju/Obi Federal Constituency), scaled second reading on Tuesday, October 28, following extensive debate on its general principles.

Moving the motion for the bill’s second reading, Rep. Ogewu said the amendment seeks to strengthen grassroots governance by bringing government closer to the people.

He noted that Benue’s vast landmass and growing population justify the need for more local councils to ensure equitable development and efficient service delivery.

The motion was seconded by Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar (Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency), who described the initiative as a step toward deepening democracy and improving governance in rural areas.

Ogewu expressed optimism that once enacted, the bill would pave the way for the creation of new LGAs across Benue, especially within his constituency. He recalled that former governor Senator George Akume had made similar attempts in 2007 to expand the number of local councils for improved administrative efficiency.

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative consideration.
