Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has stated that federalism remains the most effective system for managing Nigeria’s diversity.
Agbakoba made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television, monitored by DAILY POST.
“Nothing has changed. I feel compelled to continue saying what I have always said. Given the way we are structured and our diverse ethnic composition, the best system that works for us is federalism,” he explained.
He added, “Unless we create space within Nigeria and grant regional ethnicities a degree of autonomy within the framework of our federal system, it’s unlikely we will make significant progress.
“Over the past 25 years, the National Assembly has been implementing constitutional reforms very slowly. This year alone, over 80 amendments have been passed, but they have yet to deliver the impact we desire,” Agbakoba said.
