New Delhi / Moscow, August 20, 2025 — In response to the U.S. administration’s imposition of steep 25% punitive tariffs targeting India, Russian officials sharply criticized the move, branding it “unjustified” and “unlawful.” Despite mounting pressure, they reassured that India’s oil supply from Russia would continue uninterrupted through “special mechanisms” in place to preserve energy security.
Strong Words and Strategic Reassurance
Roman Babushkin, the Russian Charge d’Affaires in India, held a stern press briefing, denouncing the U.S. measures as emblematic of neocolonial tactics aimed at coercing sovereign policy choices. He emphasized that such unilateral pressure undermines economic stability and trust, reframing the situation as a litmus test of strength: “If the West criticizes you, you’re likely on the right path,” Babushkin asserted, urging India to interpret Western criticism as validation of independent policy.
Oil Prices and Discounted Supplies
Russia’s Deputy Trade Representative to India, Evgeny Griva, affirmed ongoing talks to offer Indian refiners roughly a 5% discount on crude oil amid market negotiations. He also described the intricately designed “special mechanism” ensuring that Indian oil imports—constituting about 40% of its total—remain secure despite external pressure.
Opening Doors to Indian Exports
Babushkin went further, offering to welcome Indian exports into Russian markets if U.S. tariffs limit access to American markets. Highlighting the strength of bilateral commerce, he reminded everyone that India–Russia trade volumes have remained robust—around US$68.7 billion in 2024–25—despite global disruptions
Rejecting Western Sanctions
Russia took a firm stance against Western sanctions, particularly those imposed outside the UN framework. Babushkin called such economic measures coercive tools propelled by double standards. “Friends don’t behave like that,” he remarked, underlining that BRICS nations—including India—do not impose or abide by extrajudicial sanctions .
Strengthening Currency and Trade Ties
To buffer against international financial risks, Russian officials encouraged a shift toward rupee-rouble transactions. They noted that this financial strategy is already bringing more stability and confidence to bilateral trade, as such currency alignments reduce dependency on Western-dominated financial systems.
Shared Support and Strategic Alignment
The series of outspoken comments from Babushkin and Griva collectively signal Russia’s unwavering strategic alliance with India. Their message was clear: India’s independent path—whether in defense, energy, or broader foreign policy—is not only defended by Moscow but also admired.
In essence, Russia is both responding defensively and advancing proactively—offering India security, market access, and diplomatic solidarity. As geopolitical tensions escalate, Moscow appears poised to double down on its partnership with India.
