Toronto Blue Jays One Win Away from Historic World Series Victory

The Toronto Blue Jays are now just one win away from their first World Series title in over three decades after a commanding 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2025 World Series.

Fueled by a dream start — back-to-back home runs from Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr on the first two pitches — and a record-breaking performance by rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage, Toronto took a 3-2 series lead heading back home to the Rogers Centre.

First-Inning Firepower Stuns Dodger Stadium

In one of the most dramatic starts in World Series history, Schneider sent the first pitch he saw sailing over the left-field wall. Moments later, Guerrero Jr. smashed the next offering deep into center, silencing Dodger Stadium and etching their names into the record books as the first pair of teammates ever to hit back-to-back home runs to open a World Series game.

The early 2-0 lead stunned the Dodgers and set the tone for a night of domination from the visiting Blue Jays.

“We came here to make history,” said Guerrero Jr. after the win. “That first inning showed who we are — aggressive, fearless, and ready.”

Trey Yesavage: Rookie Sensation Makes History

At just 22 years old, Trey Yesavage delivered a masterclass under the brightest lights. The rookie right-hander, who began the season in the minor leagues, struck out 12 batters over seven innings — setting a new World Series record for a rookie — and allowed only one run on four hits.

His poise and precision on the mound drew comparisons to some of the game’s greats.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “The kid started the year in Single-A, and now he’s dominating in the World Series. It’s one of the best stories in baseball.”

Yesavage’s journey through four minor league levels — from Dunedin (Single-A) to Buffalo (Triple-A) — before being called up in September has quickly become the stuff of legend among Blue Jays fans.

Dodgers Struggle Despite Snell’s Effort

For the Dodgers, ace Blake Snell — a two-time Cy Young Award winner — fought valiantly but couldn’t contain Toronto’s relentless offense. Snell gave up five runs on six hits through six and two-thirds innings before being pulled.

Even superstar Shohei Ohtani couldn’t spark the Dodgers’ bats, going hitless for the second consecutive game. Los Angeles managed just one run, courtesy of Enrique Hernández’s solo homer in the third inning.

After that, Toronto’s defense and pitching took full control, with Ernie Clement, Bo Bichette, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa driving in insurance runs that sent Dodger fans streaming for the exits by the eighth inning.

Home Advantage: Jays Eye History in Toronto

The Blue Jays now head back to Canada with the chance to clinch the championship on home soil — their first since 1993, when legends like Joe Carter and Robbie Alomar brought glory to Toronto.

Game 6 is scheduled for Friday, October 31, with Game 7 (if necessary) to follow on Saturday, November 1. Both will be played at the Rogers Centre, where a sold-out crowd is expected to turn the venue into a sea of blue.

“This is what we’ve been dreaming about,” said Guerrero Jr. “One more win — and we bring that trophy home.”
