Akwa Ibom: Masquerade Leader, Another Arrested for Alleged Criminal Activities and Public Disturbance

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested Uwem Umana, leader of a masquerade cultural group, along with another individual, for alleged involvement in a series of criminal activities, including illegal assembly, armed blockage of a public highway, and extortion.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed in a statement on Saturday in Uyo that the arrest followed a distress call from a concerned citizen.

According to DSP John, the masquerade group was accused of attacking citizens, blocking a public highway, and extorting money from passersby.

“The perpetrators, armed with sphere arrows, machetes, sticks, and other weapons, were physically assaulting members of the public, including NYSC members,” she said.

Investigation revealed that Uwem Umana, 45, authorized members of the “Ekpo” masquerade to wear masks and appear in public despite an existing ban on such displays. Police immediately dispatched operatives to the scene, leading to Umana’s arrest.

In a related development, David Michael, 34, of Ikot Obong Edong Village, was arrested at Ukana Onuk Village while in possession of complete masquerade costumes, reportedly preparing to invade the area.

Both suspects have been charged to court following thorough investigations. DSP John emphasized that the police will not tolerate lawlessness, intimidation, or violence, including the unauthorized use of cultural paraphernalia for criminal purposes.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare fsi, reassured the public of the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining safety and order in the state.
