In a strategic move to strengthen their football operations, RC Strasbourg Alsace have officially appointed David Weir as the club’s new Sporting Director. The former Brighton & Hove Albion Technical Director joins the Ligue 1 side amid a period of organizational transformation and growing ambition. The announcement was made on Friday, marking the latest addition to Strasbourg’s evolving leadership structure.
📋 An Experienced Leader with Premier League Pedigree
David Weir, a former Scotland international defender, brings a wealth of experience from his time in English football. He first joined Brighton in 2018 as a loans manager, overseeing the development of young players on loan at various clubs. His successful stint in this role saw him take over from Dan Ashworth as Brighton’s Technical Director in 2022, following Ashworth’s departure to Manchester United.
Weir helped Brighton establish a solid reputation for smart recruitment, player development, and team-building — principles he’s now expected to bring to Strasbourg. His tenure saw the club recruit and nurture talents such as Moisés Caicedo, Simon Adingra, and Kaoru Mitoma, firmly cementing the Seagulls as a model of modern, data-driven squad development.
🔁 Reuniting with Liam Rosenior in Alsace
At Strasbourg, Weir will be reunited with Liam Rosenior, who previously worked at Brighton as an assistant manager between 2018 and 2019. The pair will collaborate once again, this time with Weir overseeing broader sporting strategy and Rosenior managing coaching responsibility. Their combined expertise marks a promising new chapter for the French club.
🏟️ A Fresh Sporting Vision for Strasbourg
Strasbourg had been without a Sporting Director since Loïc Désiré’s departure for Rennes. Weir’s arrival is expected to fill that leadership void and help guide the club’s recruitment strategy, youth development, and long-term planning. His role became effective immediately upon signing, and he’s set to get involved right away as Strasbourg prepares for their upcoming Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday — fittingly against Loïc Désiré’s new club, Rennes.
🎙️ David Weir’s First Words as Strasbourg Sporting Director
“It is a great honour to join Racing, a historic club with a strong identity and growing ambition,” said Weir in his official statement. “I was convinced by the project and the quality of the people already in place. I look forward to settling in Strasbourg and becoming fully involved in the life of Racing.”
Strasbourg, backed by the multi-club ownership model of BlueCo (who also own Chelsea FC), has been increasingly active in the European football market, with Weir’s appointment seen as a key step in their long-term ambition to compete consistently at the highest levels.
