The Conference of Registered Voters in Nigeria (CRVN) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a 15 percent import duty on petrol and diesel, describing it as a transformative policy for the nation’s petroleum sector.
In a statement, CRVN National President Dr. Ebikeme Edesiri said the measure is protective rather than punitive, aimed at:
- Shielding domestic refineries from unfair competition
- Promoting job security
- Boosting investor confidence
- Advancing Nigeria’s energy independence
Edesiri added that the policy would attract more investments, strengthen the naira, generate government revenue, and create employment opportunities, aligning with Tinubu’s broader economic reforms, including subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, and diversification of non-oil revenue.
The group urged the federal government to ensure transparency in managing revenue from the import duty and to channel funds toward critical infrastructure, such as roads, power, and healthcare.
CRVN also appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, emphasizing that achieving energy self-sufficiency is a long-term process.
“This 15 percent import duty will protect Nigerian refineries, stimulate growth, and secure jobs. We stand solidly behind the President and his reform agenda that brings development closer to the common man,” Edesiri said.
