Cleveland Browns WR David Bell Retires at 24 Following Career-Threatening Off-Field Injury

Cleveland, OH — October 14, 2025 — Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, citing a serious off-field injury that left his football future in jeopardy. Bell, 24, made the announcement via Instagram, sharing that the decision was difficult but necessary to protect his long-term health.

“Several months ago, I was blindsided by an off-field injury that was beyond my control, which put my football future in jeopardy,” Bell wrote. “After consulting with medical experts and praying, I accept that continuing to play football would literally risk life and limb.”

Bell emphasized that retiring was “the last thing I would otherwise want to do,” reflecting on his brief yet memorable career in the NFL.

Career Highlights

Bell was a third-round draft pick in 2022, and over parts of three seasons with the Browns, he recorded 41 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns. His promising career was interrupted after he suffered a major hip injury in Week 2 of the 2024 season, which eventually led to his placement on the non-football injury list at the start of training camp.

Despite the abrupt end to his playing days, Bell expressed gratitude for his time in professional football:

“Football gave me memories I’ll cherish forever and taught me how through focus, selflessness, and determination, the whole can be greater than the collection of individuals,” he said.

Gratitude and Next Steps

Bell thanked the Browns organization, including the Haslam family, GM Andrew Berry, VP Chris Cooper, his coaches, and the medical staff who cared for his injury. He also extended his appreciation to his family and local community for their ongoing support.

“I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished and intend to apply football’s teachings to my next chapter, and to help make the world a better place,” Bell concluded.

The Browns responded publicly on Instagram:

“Appreciate you, David. It’s been a pleasure having you be a part of our organization. Best wishes in this next chapter 🧡.”

Looking Ahead

While Bell’s professional career was cut short, his focus now turns to applying the lessons learned on the field to life beyond football. His story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of professional sports and the importance of health and well-being.
