Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has explained that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was made in the best interest of the state.
Diri spoke publicly on the matter for the first time on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, following his resignation from the PDP on October 15.
The governor acknowledged that some may not immediately understand his move, but insisted that with time, it would be clear that his decision was altruistic and aimed at advancing the development of Bayelsa.
He expressed satisfaction over the gathering of various political leaders at the thanksgiving service, emphasizing that unity is crucial for the state’s progress.
“Somebody had to take the decision (to leave the PDP) and I took it on behalf of the state. I took it in the best interest of the state. Some of you might not understand now but later it will be clear to all,” Diri said.
The governor also highlighted the achievements of his administration, noting that the completion of uncompleted projects, the introduction of new initiatives, and the peace and security prevailing in the state are all reasons to be thankful.
“Politics is for development and not to kill your brother. The gathering here is a testimony of the unity in the state,” he added, urging citizens to embrace the culture of thanksgiving.
