‘Footballer’, Others Jailed for Internet Fraud in Ilorin

The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC has secured the conviction of Musa Ayomide Olasunkanmi, a self-styled footballer, along with Owolabi Bolaji Abduljeleel and Ayomide Fawas Olaoye, for offences related to impersonation and retention of proceeds of crime.

Justice Haleema Saleeman of the Kwara State High Court, sitting in Ilorin, delivered the judgment on charges brought by the anti-graft agency.

According to evidence, Olasunkanmi retained over ₦3.4 million in his Kuda Microfinance Bank account, proceeds linked to fraud. He also obtained $500 and $1,000 from victims under the guise of romantic relationships.

  • He was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment (₦200,000 fine) on count one, 6 months (₦500,000 fine) on count two, and 8 months (₦500,000 fine) on count three. The court ordered the forfeiture of his iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max, Samsung S9, and $1,000 to the Federal Government.

Ayomide Fawas Olaoye (alias Lizzy) was convicted for retaining ₦2,069,000 in his Moniepoint account. He received 3 months (₦150,000 fine), 6 months (₦250,000 fine), and 4 months (₦250,000 fine) for his counts. His $350, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and motorcycle were also forfeited.

Owolabi Bolaji Abduljeleel was found guilty of attempting to cheat by impersonating a US-based female, Rohan Scailet, on Facebook. He was fined ₦70,000, with his iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy S9 forfeited.

The EFCC highlighted that the convictions followed careful review of evidence, including extra-judicial statements, incriminating exhibits, and proof of restitution by the convicts.
