Nine military officers allegedly connected to Boko Haram reportedly escaped on Monday from a military guardroom at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, according to military sources who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters.
At the time of reporting, the Nigerian Army had yet to comment on the alleged jailbreak.
The escapees are reportedly linked to arms trafficking to terrorist groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East, raising serious concerns within the country’s security sector.
This incident comes just days after President Bola Tinubu appointed new service chiefs, adding to worries about security oversight in the region.
The jailbreak echoes previous security breaches, including a September 2024 incident when over 200 inmates escaped from a Borno prison due to flooding.
The development highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in military and correctional facilities in conflict-affected areas of Nigeria.
