Gallagher Scores as Atletico Madrid Cruise Past Union Saint-Gilloise in Champions League Victory

England international Conor Gallagher found the net as Atletico Madrid secured a convincing win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.

The former Chelsea midfielder began the match on the bench but wasted no time making an impact after being introduced by Diego Simeone in the second half. Within just 10 minutes of coming on, Gallagher reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, smashing it past Kjell Scherpen to double Atletico’s advantage.

Earlier in the game, ex-Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez had opened the scoring in the 39th minute with his second Champions League goal of the season, putting the Spanish side ahead.

Union Saint-Gilloise briefly reignited hopes of a comeback when former Accrington Stanley defender Ross Sykes headed home to make it 2-1 with 10 minutes left on the clock.

However, any chance of a late revival was snuffed out when substitute Marcos Llorente sealed the victory for Atletico in the sixth minute of stoppage time, netting his third goal of this year’s competition.

The result marks Atletico’s second win in four group matches, lifting them to 14th place in the overall standings, while Union remain in 26th position.
