Cristiano Ronaldo has said that Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim cannot be expected to “do miracles” as the club continues to search for consistency.
The 40-year-old Portugal captain, who left United for Al-Nassr in late 2022, expressed concern about his former team’s direction, saying they are “not on a good path.”
Amorim, a former Portugal international teammate of Ronaldo, took charge at Old Trafford in November 2024, succeeding Erik ten Hag. His debut season ended with United finishing 15th in the Premier League — their lowest league position since being relegated in 1973–74 — although they did reach the Europa League final.
This season began poorly, with United sitting 14th after losing three of their first six league matches. However, recent improvements have seen them climb to eighth, collecting 10 points from a possible 12.
“He’s doing his best,” Ronaldo told Piers Morgan in a recent interview. “But what are you going to do? Miracles? Miracles are impossible. In Portugal, we say, ‘miracles only happen in Fatima,’ and he’s not going to do miracles.”
Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group takeover of football operations in February 2024, United have spent around £250 million on new signings. Still, Ronaldo believes that while there is quality in the squad, not all players fully understand what representing the club means.
“Manchester United is still in my heart,” he added. “I love that club. But we have to be honest — they’re not on the right path. Change is needed, and it’s not just about the coach or the players, in my opinion.”
Ronaldo’s relationship with United ended abruptly after a high-profile 2022 interview with Morgan, in which he said he felt “betrayed” by the club and accused the hierarchy of forcing him out. His contract was terminated shortly after.
He has since criticised Erik ten Hag multiple times, calling for a complete rebuild of the club in 2024.
Currently under contract with Al-Nassr until 2027, Ronaldo is expected to represent Portugal at the 2026 World Cup. When asked about his retirement plans, he admitted the end is near but insisted he’s ready for it.
“Soon,” Ronaldo replied. “It will be difficult, of course, but I’ve been preparing for my future since I was 25 or 26. I think I’ll be ready to handle that challenge.”
