Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, a neurosurgeon with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, has been released six days after being kidnapped in Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State. The abduction occurred on the evening of Thursday, 30th October 2025, in front of his hospital.
Confirming the release on Tuesday night, Dr. Princeton Okam, State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), said Dr. Mbanugo was freed just before the expiry of the ultimatum given to the state government.
“We just finished a meeting and if the doctor had not been released, all doctors would have shut down. Fortunately, we got a call from those in contact with the kidnappers that he has been released. I have also spoken to him and he is stable,” Okam said.
The NMA chief revealed that the kidnappers had demanded N100 million as ransom. While he confirmed that a ransom was paid, he declined to disclose the exact amount for security reasons.
Okam expressed deep concern over the increasing targeting of medical personnel, emphasizing their critical role in society despite being underpaid.
“It’s worrisome that medical doctors, who provide essential services, would be targeted by kidnappers. Many doctors are leaving the country due to poor pay. Those who remain to serve must be spared,” he said.
He called on the government to intensify efforts to secure the lives and property of residents, particularly medical personnel, to ensure they can continue their duties safely.
“We get duty calls late at night. Does it mean we can no longer honour them? We want a secure environment so everyone can go about their legitimate businesses,” Okam added.
The release of Dr. Mbanugo comes amid growing national concern over the safety of healthcare workers in Nigeria, particularly in regions prone to kidnapping and criminal attacks.
