Dangote Refinery Guarantees Steady Fuel Supply Amid New Import Duty

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reaffirmed its commitment to providing consistent and uninterrupted supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) nationwide, with a daily production capacity exceeding domestic demand.

Speaking in Lagos, Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer at Dangote Industries Limited, said the refinery produces over 45 million litres of PMS and 25 million litres of diesel daily, ensuring that Nigeria’s energy needs are met without reliance on imports.

“We are working collaboratively with regulatory agencies and distribution partners to guarantee efficient nationwide delivery. This significant production capacity enhances energy security and reduces dependence on imports,” Chiejina stated.

The assurance comes amid concerns over the recent 15% tariff on imported petrol and diesel, which the government introduced to protect local refineries and encourage investment in the domestic oil sector.

Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, National President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), said the tariff should not worry Nigerians.

“There is no cause for alarm since we have a local refinery that can meet national demand. The policy encourages investors to build and operate refineries in Nigeria rather than rely on importation,” he explained.

Chiejina further emphasized that protecting local refineries is critical to preventing dumping of cheap petroleum products, which undermines domestic production and discourages industrial investment.

The refinery’s impact is evident in fuel price stabilization: PMS prices dropped from around N1,030 per litre in September 2024 to N841–N851 in September 2025, while diesel prices fell across the country.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the reversal of the 15% fuel import duty, warning it could worsen the economic hardship for Nigerians and push petrol prices above N1,000 per litre.

“Economic growth that condemns the majority to poverty and misery is not progress, it is destruction,” the party said in a statement, urging the government to balance energy policy with citizen welfare.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s President, Aliko Dangote, had earlier assured Nigerians that fuel prices would remain stable during the festive period, highlighting the refinery’s role as a national asset in ensuring energy security.
