SWEEP Foundation Launches 2025 Lagos Community Waste Challenge

LagosSWEEP Foundation has officially launched the Lagos Waste Challenge 2025, the second edition of its flagship community-driven waste management competition, with support from Coca-Cola Nigeria. The initiative seeks to unite Community Development Councils (CDCs) across Lagos State in promoting creativity, innovation, and environmental sustainability.

Running from November 1 to 22, 2025, the Challenge encourages communities to implement impactful waste recovery and recycling projects, fostering environmental awareness and lasting change in their neighborhoods.

Following the success of the inaugural edition—where Egbe-Idimu LCDA emerged as champions in 2024—this year’s Challenge aims to deepen community participation, promote scalable solutions, and accelerate Lagos’s progress toward a cleaner and greener future.

The 2025 Lagos Waste Challenge features a total prize pool of ₦2 million, including:

  • ₦1 million for first place
  • ₦500,000 for second place
  • ₦250,000 for third place
  • ₦50,000 each for five consolation winners

Speaking on the launch, President of SWEEP Foundation, Obuesi Phillips, described the Challenge as more than a competition, calling it a movement to inspire collective responsibility for the environment. He said, “By harnessing the creativity and determination of our communities, we can transform waste management practices across Lagos State. We are eager to see the innovative solutions our CDCs will present and are confident this initiative will have a lasting impact.”

Winners of the Lagos Waste Challenge 2025 will be announced and celebrated at the Lagos Waste Forum, scheduled for December 2–3, 2025—a high-level gathering of policymakers, community leaders, environmental advocates, and private sector partners dedicated to advancing sustainability across Nigeria.
