Angélique Kidjo Advises Musicians Against Writing Songs for Political Parties

Grammy-winning Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo has urged musicians to avoid composing music in praise of politicians or political parties, warning that political power is fleeting and artists tied to it risk losing relevance when regimes change.

Speaking on the Female Poets Society podcast, Kidjo recalled her father’s advice to steer clear of aligning with any political party, noting that leaders come and go, and artists who tie their work to them often fade into obscurity once power shifts.

“Write your music with your own opinions. Be free,” she advised. “Don’t be sold to somebody because then you stop being the voice of the people and become the voice of those in power. When that power changes, you’re off the window.”

Kidjo emphasized that musicians should prioritize expressing their independent voice, representing the people, and creating art that endures beyond political cycles.

Her advice encourages artists to maintain integrity, ensuring their work remains relevant and impactful regardless of who holds office.
