Troops Rescue Military Officer, Nine Others from Kidnappers in Benue

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have successfully rescued a military officer and nine other abducted victims from kidnappers in Benue State.

The operation was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer at OPWS Headquarters, Makurdi.

According to Zubairu, the rescue followed an intelligence report received on November 3, indicating that kidnappers—disguised in police uniforms—were operating a fake checkpoint along the Zaki-Biam–Wukari Road in Kyado, Ukum Local Government Area.

“Upon receiving the information, troops swiftly mobilised to the scene. On sighting the approaching soldiers, the kidnappers fled into nearby bushes,” the statement read.

The troops pursued the fleeing suspects deep into the forest and successfully rescued 10 kidnapped victims, including Warrant Officer John Richard of the 6 Brigade Band, Jalingo. Two victims remain unaccounted for as search operations continue.

Zubairu added that all rescued individuals have been handed over to relevant authorities for further action.

The Force Commander, OPWS, Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, commended the troops for their swift response, gallantry, and professionalism, praising the tactical commander for his proactive leadership in combating criminal elements in the area.

“The troops’ dedication to safeguarding lives and maintaining peace in the region remains exemplary,” Gara said.
