FCTA, Youths Launch ‘Breathe Clean Air’ Campaign in Abuja Schools, Markets

Young environmental advocates have kicked off a campaign against air pollution in schools and markets across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), supporting government efforts to promote clean energy and protect public health.

The initiative, dubbed Breathe Clean Air Abuja, is a public-private partnership under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), led by Minister Nyesom Wike. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of using charcoal and firewood for cooking and encourage adoption of gas stoves in over 5,000 households across the six area councils.

Youth volunteers visited major markets and schools, distributing flyers, engaging students, and sensitizing traders on clean energy practices and environmental protection.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, said the administration is collaborating with Rotaract Clubs and other partners to educate young people about the health risks of air pollution. She added that the partnership seeks to expand outreach efforts and inspire youth-led initiatives on environmental sustainability.

The advocacy team, led by Rotaractor and behavioural advocate Daniella Omotola, included members of various Rotaract Clubs and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) participants.

Omotola explained that the campaign uses interactive approaches such as competitions, debates, talent hunts, and social media challenges to engage students and encourage creativity in environmental protection.

“Air pollution affects our planet and our lives. As youths, we must get involved in protecting our environment for future generations,” she said.

She also expressed gratitude to FCT Minister Wike and Dr. Fasawe for supporting the project and trusting the youth to drive change. The Breathe Clean Air Abuja campaign is officially set to launch on November 13.
