In a ‘Drishyam’-Like Crime, Woman, Lover, and Relatives Kill Husband, Bury Body Beneath Kitchen Floor in Ahmedabad

In a shocking crime reminiscent of the plot from the film Drishyam, a woman in Ahmedabad allegedly conspired with her lover and two relatives to murder her husband, cut up his body, and bury the remains beneath the kitchen floor of their home. Nearly a year after the killing, the Ahmedabad city crime branch on Tuesday exhumed the victim’s bones and other remains from the locked house in the city’s Sarkhej area, unraveling a macabre cover-up that had remained hidden for months.

The case came to light following the disappearance of 38-year-old Samir Ansari, a construction worker who had migrated from Bihar to Ahmedabad in 2016 after marrying Ruby, the main accused. Police officials said that Ruby, along with her lover Imran Vaghela and two relatives, Rahim and Mohsin, executed the crime around a year ago. While Vaghela has been arrested, Ruby and her two relatives are currently on the run.

The Discovery

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Rajian, investigators exhumed human bones and skeletal remains from beneath the cemented floor of the couple’s kitchen on Tuesday night. The recovery followed months of surveillance and investigation after police received a tip-off that Ansari had been missing for nearly a year, though no missing person’s complaint had ever been filed.

“We received information about a man who had not been seen for a long time in the Sarkhej area. After keeping a watch and conducting discreet inquiries, we discovered that no police report had ever been made about his disappearance. During interrogation, Imran Vaghela, who lived nearby, broke down and confessed to the murder,” DCP Rajian told reporters.

How Police Unraveled the Case

Investigators said they first began probing the case about three months ago, when local sources alerted them to the prolonged absence of Ansari, who had once been a familiar face in the neighborhood. Officers from the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch began tracing his connections and soon discovered that his wife Ruby was no longer living in the house.

“During questioning, Imran Vaghela admitted that he and two others murdered Ansari at Ruby’s request,” DCP Rajian said. “Ruby allegedly asked them to kill her husband after he began assaulting her upon discovering her affair with Vaghela.”

Ansari, originally from Bihar’s Madhubani district, had settled in Ahmedabad with Ruby after their love marriage. The couple had two young children and lived in the Ahmedi Row House area near the Fatehwadi canal, where Ruby is believed to have developed an extramarital relationship with Vaghela, a local resident.

The Murder and the Cover-Up

According to police, the murder took place inside the couple’s home sometime in late 2024. Acting on Ruby’s instructions, Vaghela and her relatives Rahim and Mohsin allegedly attacked Ansari late at night.

“With the help of Ruby and two others, Imran first slit Ansari’s throat and then cut the body into pieces,” the DCP said. “They dug a pit in the kitchen floor, buried the remains, and sealed it with a fresh layer of cement and tiles to conceal the evidence. Ruby continued to live in that same house for several months after the killing.”

Neighbors, when questioned later, told police that they occasionally asked Ruby about her husband’s whereabouts. “She would tell people that Ansari had gone to another city for work,” said a police official involved in the investigation.

Eventually, Ruby and her children left the house and moved elsewhere, locking up the property behind them. When the police, acting on their lead, broke open the house in the presence of an executive magistrate, they were met with a grisly discovery — skeletal remains buried beneath the kitchen tiles, just a few feet from where the family once ate their meals.

The remains have since been sent for forensic and DNA analysis to confirm the victim’s identity, though police say the circumstantial and confessional evidence already points conclusively to Ansari.

Motive and Aftermath

Investigators believe that the motive was rooted in Ruby’s alleged extramarital affair. “Ruby saw her husband as an obstacle in her relationship with Imran,” said DCP Rajian. “After frequent domestic disputes, she decided to eliminate him. Imran carried out the killing to prove his loyalty to her.”

Police are now conducting raids across Gujarat and neighboring states to trace Ruby, Rahim, and Mohsin, who remain absconding. Vaghela, who has been arrested, is cooperating with investigators. He reportedly expressed regret but insisted that Ruby was the mastermind who planned the murder and disposal in detail.

The authorities are also examining whether the accused received help in disposing of evidence or concealing the crime scene. “The way the floor was rebuilt and the site was camouflaged suggests professional help may have been involved,” a senior officer said.

A Crime Straight Out of ‘Drishyam’

The sensational nature of the case — a meticulously concealed killing, a body hidden beneath a household floor, and a long period of deception — has drawn comparisons to the hit Malayalam film Drishyam, later remade in Hindi with actor Ajay Devgn. In the movie, the protagonist buries the body of a young man under the floor of a police station to protect his family and constructs an elaborate alibi to evade suspicion.

In real life, however, the motives and consequences are far more tragic. The Ahmedabad case underscores how premeditated violence and emotional manipulation can lead to horrifying outcomes.

Police officers investigating the case said that Ruby appeared to have lived a “double life” for months — maintaining the façade of a normal household while hiding her husband’s body just below the floor. “It is chilling to imagine that she stayed in that same house with her children, cooked in that kitchen, and received guests, all while knowing her husband was buried underneath,” said one investigator.

The Road Ahead

Forensic teams are now working to establish the time of death and confirm the identity of the remains through DNA profiling. Once confirmed, the findings will form the foundation for the charges against the accused. Police expect to file a comprehensive chargesheet once the forensic report is complete and the absconding suspects are apprehended.

Meanwhile, the discovery has left the local community deeply unsettled. Residents of the Sarkhej neighborhood expressed shock and disbelief, saying that Ruby had appeared “quiet and ordinary.” “No one could have imagined such a thing happening in our area,” said a neighbor.

As the Ahmedabad police continue their investigation, the case stands as one of the most chilling examples of domestic crime in recent years — a grim real-life echo of a film’s fictional plot, where love, betrayal, and secrecy converged beneath the floor of a seemingly ordinary kitchen.
