Famous Nigerian comedians, AY Makun and Basketmouth, have opened up about their longstanding 17-year feud, shedding light on the impact it had on their lives and careers.
As reported by JOINTEARN, the comedians’ public fallout, which began in 2006, kept them in the media spotlight for over a decade and a half. During this time, the two avoided each other, with rumors and speculation surrounding their rift. Their relationship remained tense until their highly publicized reunion in September 2024, when they made their first joint appearance together after reconciling.
In a candid discussion on the latest episode of the ‘Glass House’ podcast, both comedians reflected on the damage caused by their prolonged dispute. AY spoke openly about how the feud began, admitting that he wasn’t even fully aware of when it all started. “I didn’t know when the fight started. I just noticed it started,” AY shared. “Every day I wake up thinking boys will be boys, and like that, it grows into several years. People were spreading more rumors about it until it lasted that long.”
AY also acknowledged that their feud caused significant harm, particularly because both of them were seen as key figures who provided opportunities for others in the comedy industry. “Our feud caused some damages because, in a way, we were like providers for people,” he explained.
Basketmouth, on his part, pointed out how the fallout also led to people taking sides, further fueling the animosity. “Most times, people swear allegiance by default. So when we were not on good terms, some people made it their business,” he noted. He went on to recall an incident where someone who had chosen to side with him during the conflict now finds themselves uncertain with the reconciliation. “There was a guy that picked sides and came at me. Now that we are cool, he would be confused. It is a collaboration over competition,” Basketmouth concluded.
This heartfelt conversation highlights how their rivalry affected not only their own lives but also the broader comedy community, where their fans and colleagues were caught in the middle of their feud.
