After 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, Brittney Griner begins a new chapter with the Atlanta Dream, energized by the move and setting her sights on the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
A New Beginning with the Atlanta Dream
Griner was initially surprised by Phoenix’s decision to move in a different direction but is embracing her new role. Last season, she averaged 17.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game, showcasing a refined long-range shot with 50% accuracy on 18 attempts from beyond the arc.
Dream coach Karl Smesko’s five-out offense is helping Griner develop her perimeter game, a key adaptation for her continuing success.
Olympic Ambitions for 2028
Griner, who will be 37 at the time of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, aims to make her fourth Olympic team and compete for a fourth gold medal. Despite limited minutes in the 2024 Games, her motivation remains strong.
She says, “It’s a goal of mine… to play at the Olympics in your home country would be amazing.”
Career Outlook
Griner is clear about her longevity: she wants to contribute meaningfully and won’t hesitate to retire if her game declines. “When I can’t help my team or become a liability, I will walk away,” she told ESPN.
