Dele Farotimi Sent to Prison Custody

Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has been remanded in prison for allegedly defaming Aare Afe Babalola, a prominent legal figure and founder of Afe Babalola University.

Earlier reports indicated that Farotimi was brought before a Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti on Monday, facing charges of defamation in connection with his recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The book allegedly maligned Babalola’s character.

Farotimi pleaded not guilty to all sixteen charges. Police prosecutor Samson Osun requested that Farotimi be held in prison custody pending further investigation, citing the need to maintain national security.

In contrast, Farotimi’s counsel, Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the remand, urging the court to grant bail on liberal terms, arguing that the case is bailable and that the defendant poses no threat. Akeredolu emphasized that Farotimi is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Despite the defense’s request, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled in favor of remanding Farotimi in prison, with the case adjourned until December 10.
