Delhi Tribunal Awards Over ₹1.62 Crore Compensation to 21-Year-Old Injured in Road Accident

New Delhi, January 18, 2026: A Delhi Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has awarded over ₹1.62 crore in compensation to a 21-year-old man who suffered severe injuries in a road accident in July 2024, leaving him with 53 per cent temporary disability.

The tribunal, presided over by Officer Vikram, delivered the judgment after examining the petition filed by Aryan Rana, who was a first-year university student at the time of the accident.

Accident Details

On July 1, 2024, Aryan Rana was riding his scooty on his way home when he was hit from behind by a rashly-driven bus. The collision caused grievous injuries, and Rana was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

During the proceedings, the respondents attempted to claim false implication in the case but failed to substantiate their claims or file any formal complaints. The bus conductor testified that Rana’s scooty was ahead of the bus and that the collision occurred as the bus attempted to overtake him.

Tribunal’s Findings

In its judgment dated January 6, 2026, the tribunal held that the driver’s rashness and negligence were clearly responsible for the accident and the subsequent injuries.

Medical records certified that Aryan Rana had suffered 53 per cent temporary disability. However, considering the severity of his injuries and the impact on his future employability, the tribunal concluded that his functional disability amounted to 90 per cent, as his physical limitations would prevent him from earning a livelihood at full capacity.

The tribunal also noted that the accident had a profound impact on Rana’s education, as he was unable to continue his university studies due to his injuries.

Compensation Awarded

The tribunal awarded over ₹1.62 crore, distributed across various heads:

  • ₹59.36 lakh for loss of future earnings
  • Compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, and loss of amenities
  • Other heads covering the long-term financial impact of disability

Since the vehicle was insured, the tribunal directed the insurer, The New India Co. Ltd., to deposit the full compensation amount to the petitioner without delay.

Significance

This award highlights the tribunal’s approach in assessing long-term consequences of road accidents on young victims, especially those whose education and career prospects are significantly affected. It reinforces the principle that insurance companies and vehicle owners are fully liable for damages arising from negligent driving.

The case also underscores the growing importance of tribunals in swiftly delivering justice to accident victims, ensuring that compensation reflects not just immediate medical costs, but the long-term economic and personal impact of disabilities.
