Ten years after the internet gave birth to one of the most bizarre yet beloved viral memes, Demi Lovato is once again embracing the weirdness—with a wink and a laugh.
In a hilarious TikTok posted on Monday (April 21), the pop star poked fun at the legendary “Poot Lovato” meme that took over the internet back in 2015. Using a popular audio clip with the caption prompt, “When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…”, Demi lip-syncs with stone-cold sarcasm: “What an offer, let me sleep on it though.”
The kicker? Demi added in the caption: “And I’m never letting her out.”
A Decade of Poot-lore
For the uninitiated, “Poot Lovato” is a fictional character born from a strangely edited, unflattering photo of Demi taken at the 2014 Royal Variety Performance. A Tumblr user dubbed the image “Demi’s twin sister,” claiming she had been “locked in a basement her whole life.” Thus, the legend of Poot was born.
The absurdity of the story—paired with the hauntingly different image—made Poot a viral sensation almost overnight. While the meme originally annoyed Demi (they called it a “s–tty angle” back in 2015), the singer has since leaned into the humor over the years.
Poot Lives On
This isn’t the first time Lovato has cracked a joke about Poot. In 2018, they tweeted, “Poot is locked up… She’s allergic to sunlight.” And in 2023, they even celebrated their 31st birthday with cupcakes decorated with edible images of Poot’s face—because why not?
Lovato’s newest TikTok proves they’ve fully embraced the chaotic energy of their meme-ified alter ego. And fans are loving the self-aware humor.
Demi’s Busy 2025
The Poot post comes on the heels of Demi being announced as the headliner for Caron Treatment Centers’ 31st Annual New York Gala, continuing their advocacy for mental health and recovery. It’s just one of many projects in the works for the Confident singer this year.
