A large group of Democratic lawmakers expressed concerns on Wednesday over plans to potentially close several Social Security Administration (SSA) field offices, urging the agency to keep these essential offices open.
In a letter addressed to acting SSA Commissioner Lee Dudek, the group of lawmakers stated their apprehension in response to reports suggesting that many field offices might be closed this year as part of the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) initiatives.
The lawmakers emphasized that field offices are critical for Social Security recipients who rely on in-person assistance. They noted that approximately 170,000 people visit an SSA office daily for help, and the closure of any offices would make it increasingly difficult for beneficiaries to access the services they need.
The letter was signed by a notable group of Democrats, including Senators Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Mazie Hirono (Hawaii), Peter Welch (Vt.), and Representatives Delia Ramirez (Ill.), Jennifer McClellan (Va.), and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.).
Reports on Office Closures
According to reports from the Associated Press, data from the General Services Administration indicated that 47 SSA offices were marked for closure, with 26 of them expected to shut down later in 2025.
However, the SSA has disputed these claims, stating that reports suggesting permanent office closures are false. In a press release from late March, the agency clarified that there were no definitive plans to close these offices. Despite this, the SSA has faced public outcry in the past for attempting to close offices, only to backtrack after backlash.
Democratic Letter’s Request
The letter from the Democrats directly asked the SSA to commit to keeping all field offices open, urging transparency in identifying any offices that may be closed and providing clear reasoning behind those decisions.
In response, White House spokesperson Liz Huston criticized the Democratic response, accusing them of prioritizing illegal immigrants over U.S. constituents, particularly seniors. Huston reiterated that President Trump is committed to protecting Social Security and modernizing the system, enhancing customer service, and combating fraud.
The SSA has yet to comment on the letter and the concerns raised by the lawmakers.
