The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reportedly reviewing a reality TV show concept called “The American”, where immigrants would compete in challenges across the U.S. for a chance to win citizenship. The show was pitched by Canadian-born producer Rob Worsoff, known for reality hits like Duck Dynasty and The Millionaire Matchmaker.
Show Concept and DHS Response
The show would feature 12 immigrant contestants arriving by boat at Ellis Island, then traveling by train through various states to complete uniquely American-themed challenges, such as rolling logs in Wisconsin and mining for gold in San Francisco. The winner would be sworn in as a U.S. citizen in front of the Capitol and receive additional prizes like airline miles and gift cards.
A DHS spokesperson clarified that the show is in the “very beginning stages” of review and has not been approved or rejected. Contrary to some reports, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has neither seen nor endorsed the show.
Producer’s Intentions
Worsoff stated he is not politically affiliated but aims to celebrate the immigration process and spark a national conversation about what it means to be American, from the perspective of immigrants themselves.
Political Context
The pitch comes amid political scrutiny of DHS and Secretary Noem, who has been criticized for staged photo ops and “costume changes” during immigration enforcement events. Representative Bennie Thompson recently called attention to these controversies in congressional hearings.
