Fashion Icon Donatella Versace to Become Brand Ambassador as Dario Vitale Takes Over
Donatella Versace has announced her departure as creative director of Versace, marking the end of an era after nearly three decades of leadership. The 69-year-old, who took over the role in 1997 following the tragic murder of her brother Gianni Versace, will now transition into a brand ambassador position.
A New Chapter for Versace
Versace will be succeeded by Dario Vitale, a former design director at Miu Miu, as part of a strategic succession plan. Capri Holdings, the parent company of Versace, praised Vitale as a “strong design leader” who will play a key role in the brand’s future growth.
The move comes amid speculation of a potential acquisition by the Prada Group, which is reportedly interested in buying Versace from Capri Holdings. Capri originally acquired the iconic Italian fashion house in 2018 for €2 billion (£1.67 billion).
Donatella’s Legacy and Statement
In an emotional Instagram post to her 12 million followers, Donatella called her time leading Versace “the greatest honor of my life.”
“Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart,” she wrote, expressing excitement for Vitale’s new leadership and reaffirming her commitment to nurturing the next generation of designers.
Donatella’s Influence on Fashion
Throughout her tenure, Donatella Versace transformed the brand, dressing global superstars such as Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. She is famously credited with designing the iconic green jungle dress worn by Jennifer Lopez in 2000, as well as Michelle Obama’s gown for her final state dinner in 2016.
Versace, founded in Milan in 1978 by Donatella, Gianni, and their brother Santo, remains a cornerstone of luxury fashion, generating 20% of Capri Holdings’ €5.2 billion (£4.3 billion) revenue in 2024.
With a new creative director at the helm, Versace’s next chapter is set to redefine luxury fashion once again.
